Catherine Ann Irwin
ARTIST STATEMENT
catherine irwin…
a local production artifact.
a low-grade mid-20th freak century freak personage.
a singer and songwriter. a painter of houses with a house full of paintings.
a scribbling whining brat with a fist full of crayons.
i was never actually thrown out of art school. i just wandered off.
i have made quite a few records with the band FreakWater, a couple under my own name, and one particularly nice one — about the ravages of coal mining — with the FREAKONS.
most robots couldn’t live a day inside my brain.
there is just one egg. there is just one basket. so the risk is real, but the stakes are low.
for me, the best part of making a painting or writing a song is simply getting to the end of it. it may take days, or decades. but ideally, there will be a moment when i finally understand what the hell i was trying to say.
paintings and songs are bills of account sent to my future self for services not yet rendered. the same effect may be replicated by swallowing a crystal ball, or pressing a glass eye to a telescope trained on the milky way. something is revealed — even if it is ultimately of no consequence. nothing is nothing.
don’t be a fool. stay in school.
also, please remember to vote — unless you’re a fascist. thanks.
